Forum: feature_films Subject: Special thanks to multiple version uploaders

Thanks, kudos, and appreciation to anyone who goes to the trouble to upload a feature film to the Archive, especially since most of us have asymmetric Internet connections, where the outgoing pipe is much smaller than the incoming one, so that a large upload may take all night to complete. Special thanks, though, for those who go to the trouble to upload alternate versions of a film that is already on the Archive, either because they found a better print, or to provide the film in an alternative encoding format.

Many of the feature films on the archive are MPEG2 rips from DVDs that weigh in at 2-4 GIGAbytes. Those are great for people who want to burn DVDs that recreate the originals, but for those of us who just want to watch them on our computers once or twice and then delete them? The choices are to spend hours downloading a huge MPEG2 file that ties up lots of hard disk space, or settle for one of the low resolution (320x240), low bitrate (512Kb) files that are automatically generated from them.

Thanks and appreciation, therefore, to those who transcode and then upload something intermediate between those two choices: high quality (higher bitrate), high resolution (as much as 640x480), highly compressed A/V files in either MP4 format (AVC and AAC encoding), or in AVI format, usually with some flavour of H.263 ASP video encoding (Xvid, DivX, etc). These files seldom weigh in at more than a gigabyte (600-900 MB is more common), which is just right for downloading over an intermediate speed broadband connection (1.8 Mbps in my case) and watching on the PC.

If I haven't made myself quite clear yet, my thanks and appreciation to those of you who go to the trouble of uploading alternative encoding formats for films that already exist on the Archive.

We're glad that some appreciate our work.
